Topic 9 Publishing on the web (WordPress)

The topc 9 task was a useful start to extending my knowledge.   The simplicity of adding new pages gives the learner confidence that the blog can start to look like a multipage website.

Just as valuable are the HTML walkthrough notes explaining the basics helped me realise that Hyper Text Markup Language is used to create a webpage that allows, text, graphics and other information to be viewed through a browser.   It is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol that allows publication of the materials online.   If HTML was designed to display data and XML (EXtensible Markup Language) designed to store and transport data I needed to be clear  that XML and HTML were designed with different goals:

  • XML was designed to transport and store data, with focus on what data is
  • HTML was designed to display data, with focus on how data looks

The knowledge that HTML is about displaying information, while XML is about carrying information helped.   I still need more information on how XML workflows have changed educational publishing.

The XML language has no predefined tags HTML documents can only use tags defined in the HTML standard (like <p>, <h1>, etc.). ie XML is not a replacement for HTML and once again so much to know…
